Capstone Reflection

During this project i had the pleasure of working in a garage. I spent 25 hours working at the Union Street Garage and during that period of time there were many problems that were faced during this period of time, There were times that we had to wait hours just for parts to come in and other times we had cars come in for a routine check up and turned into a project that took twice as long as it should've taken us. I've grown as a person because every time i went over to the garage i never wanted to leave because I loved being there. I learned something new every time i went in. I feel like i have a better understanding in cars and hopefully will keep learning because i am thinking of taking classes in college to get an even better understanding. Over this time i learned that you need pacients in this business because some projects are easy that don't take long but other projects just take up the hold day and you wish you never even started this project. In the end i had a great time spending time at this garage and have developed a relationship with my mentor that i have hoped for .

Capstone Day 6

Time Spent: 4 Hours
Total time: 25 Hours

Today at Union street Garage I came to finish up my hours with my mentor. I decided to try to learn something new about cars so i wanted to learn how to put a car on a jack stand so today i got to watch someone teach me how to do that if i ever get a flat tire. As well as learning that i got to watch Joel do another smog today and he finally got to teach me more behind smog checks. I learned if you ever see blue smoke coming out of your car that means your car is burning oil and that is very bad not just for the car but the environment.

Capstone Day 5

Time Spent: 5 hours
Total Time: 21 hours

Today at Union Street Garage I decided to come in the morning to see how the garage opens and how many cars come in the morning. Today was a slow day so i got to learn more things because the mechanics had more time to show me how to do things more efficiently. I learned more things about what things to check under the hood every time you go fill up gas. You should check your brake fluids, coolant and windshield fluids. After you check those things you should check the battery and see if there is no corrosion on it and after you check that you should check your tire pressure.

Capstone Day 4

Time Spent: 4 Hours
Total Time: 16 Hours

Today at Union Street Garage I came and as usual i got to watch over one of my favorite mechanics there and his name is Joel. He is the top mechanic at the shop and likes to teach me new things about cars. I have learned so much from him about what to look for in a car when buying one to know if it is a good car or not. I learned how to do an oil change today even though i didn't do it myself i took some notes on it that are detailed enough for me to do it on my own.

Capstone Project Day 3

Time Spent: 4 Hours
Total Time: 12 Hours

Today was another busy day at Union Street Garage today i got to watch one of the mechanics work on this 1997 mercedes that had bad brakes on it. We had to put the car on the hoist and go through the brakes and change them. The brakes were completely gone and if the customer didn't come in he could've gotten into an accident because his brakes would've failed on him. This job took most of the time i was there because we had to wait for this one part and as we were waiting we had many more cars that needed fixing.

Capstone Project Day 2

Time Spent: 4 Hours
Total Time: 8 Hours

Today at Union Street Garage I got work with Joel again but instead of working on fixing cars, we were doing smog checks. A smog is a test done on the car to see the types of chemicals it is letting out in the atmosphere. When we are doing smogs we have to make sure that all the components of the car are working perfectly and aren't letting harmful chemicals out. So first you have to check under the hood of the car to make sure there are no added parts to the car that can affect the car, that there are no tears or damages done to any part and if there is any leaks. After you check for that you have to make sure there are no mechanical problems and by doing that you are checking the car is working good. While you are running the car you have to make sure that there isn't any black smoke comming out of the exhaust pipe. If there is anything wrong with the car then the mechanics have to fail the car and the car cannot be driven on the streets. Luckily there were no cars that didn't pass today because it would suck to have to tell the driver that he can't drive his car on the street. It was todat learning about what look for when doing a smog, hopefully next time I can work on cars again and learn more.

Capstone Project Day 1

Time spent: 4 Hours
Total Time: 4 Hours

Today is my first day at Union Street Garage, I got to meet all the mechanics and find out a little about each one. Theres one mechanic that I was assigned to and his name his Joey. He was teaching me about what goes on in the shop and what they have to do to each car that comes in. He was telling me that most of the cars that come in they have to do a full service. A full service is making sure the car runs great, check the breaks, wheel, tire pressure, engine and change the oil. So for the first time i got to learn how to do all that on my own. Doing a full service to them is an easy task because they do it all the time but it gets hard when something is wrong with the car. One f the cars that came in today the breaks were worn out. So it usually take about a half an hour to forty five minutes to do a full service but when something is wrong with the car it turns into an hour and half job. When I was working on the breaks i had to be really careful about where I put each part because if I didn't put each part in the correct spot the breaks wouldn't work properly. I had a great first day today and would like to learn more about the parts of a car and how each part works. Hopefully next time I can learn more about doing a smog on a car.

Personal Narrative

Have you ever loved someone so much, but you did not realize how much you did until they were out of your life. When I was a kid everyone in my family lived in the U.S. In 2002 my grandma and grampa decided to move back to Jordan to live a more stable life. When they moved back I didn't realize how much I would missed them and how much they were apart of my life. My grandma was a like a second mom to me, as I was growing she was the one who took care of me and fed me each day. My Parents had work everyday so it made it hard for my brother, my sister and I to be able to spend time with them as much as we would have liked too. So we would spend most of our days with our grandparents. It devastated me  when they decided to leave the U.S.

My gramparents had always been in my life and seeing them leave had changed me. I had changed because it had never crossed my mind that they would ever decide to leave. I feel that I have never gotten as close to someone as I did my gramparents. After they had left I cried for many days because I knew that wouldn't be able to see them for a long period of time. I believe that this made me who I am today in away, I try not to get my hopes up as much because there's always that feeling that someone will leave me or will turn their back on me. After four years of not being able to see them my family decide on going down to Jordan to go visit them. When we arrived it was like they had never left. I feel that seeing my gramparent and talking to them about why they had left had helped me cope with the situation of them leaving.

I woukld like to say that my life had changed since my experience with my gramparents. I have become a better person and had decide to trust in people more instead of not letting them in my life. After we say my gramparents that year, a year later my grampa died and even though i was devastated I still remmeber what he taught me about being a strong person and never letting people put me down.
